"Is it a Hybrid, or is it a Diesel?"
Watercolor, Charcoal, Oil, on mixed paper
At first glance, this image is just another locomotive. However, there is more to this painting than meets the eye. Design-wise this little switcher looks like an electric locomotive. But on closer inspection, it is in fact a diesel. The artist is interested in the idea that railroads have been asking the question of how to power their vehicles since at least the 19th century. In contrast we as individuals are only beginning to question how our personal vehicles should be powered. The old ways of living and doing things based primarily on the use of fossil fuels is no longer acceptable, and we as a species need to decide what is more important, economics or the future of our planet.
