The artist has a family connection to Colorado and grew up with an Aspen tree in the backyard. The texture and color of these trees is immediately familiar to him, and this image recalls each of those aspects. It also represents a reflection on family. Families have long been traced and represented by trees, as in “your family tree,” or “knowing your roots.” Aspen trees are the embodiment of this idea as they are quite literally all related to one another. They grow from shoots that extend up from the roots of one tree, and constantly expand until there are several. They are all individual trees and at the same time they have this family element linking them together by their roots.
